"Rain" by Raymond Carver

On a trip to California last week, Chris and I popped into San Francisco’s City Lights Books to browse, and I felt that old longing rise up: for more books, more reading, more giving myself over to language and story. I came home determined to make more time for it all. And I came to a forecast full of rain, as the forecast here has been for weeks, glorious weeks, here in spring-lush Austin.

And so this Raymond Carver poem, which I’ve been eyeing for the poetry box for years. In celebration of rain. And a day in bed with books. And the glory of being alive, despite all our mistakes.

“Then looked out the window at the rain.
And gave over. Put myself entirely
in the keep of this rainy morning.”
