"Archilochus Colibris" by José A. Alcátara

With summer come the hummingbirds. I have seen them hovering above the Turks cap, sipping from the zinnias, and I know when we arrive in Taos later this week they will be all over town, making good use of the hollyhocks climbing alongside the buildings. So for this peak summer moment, a poem about hummingbirds which is, as well, a poem about the sunniest season.

“They come bearing the light of Panama,
Colombia, Costa Rica, the red fire of the tropics”
